On April 22, Commission Regulation (EU) 2025/652 of April 2, 2025, amending Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council and Commission Regulation (EU) No 231/2012 with regard to the use of steviol glycosides produced by fermentation using Yarrowia lipolytica, entered into force.
Until now, steviol glycosides obtained through three different manufacturing processes were authorized: steviol glycosides from stevia (E 960a), enzymatically produced steviol glycosides (E 960c) and glycosylated steviol glycosides (E 960d).
The new sweetener is composed of at least 95% rebaudioside M, D, A, and B and is obtained by fermentation of a source of simple sugars using the genetically modified VRM strain of Yarrowia lipolytica. The conditions of use are the same as those already authorized for the group of steviol glycosides (E 960a-960d), and its name on food products containing it will be steviol glycosides from fermentation or E 960b.
