On April 30, Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/691 of April 9, 2025, authorizing the placing on the market vitamin D2 mushroom powder as a novel food and amending Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470, entered into force.
The novel food is produced by controlled exposure of Agaricus bisporus mushroom powder to UV irradiation.
The labeling of food products containing it must be UV-treated mushroom powder containing vitamin D2. If they are food supplements, the following warning must appear: not to be consumed by infants or young children.
The maximum vitamin D2 content will vary depending on the food category, being 15 μg/day in food supplements.
Only Luxidum GmbH will be authorised to place the novel food on the EU market for a period of 5 years from 30 April 2025, unless a subsequent applicant obtains an authorisation for that novel food without referring to the protected scientific data or having obtained the consent of Luxidum GmbH.
